Children are heard reading both individually and in groups regularly. Whole Class Guided Reading sessions are carefully planned and questioning is used to assess and extend children's learning. Using high quality texts, children will be developing their comprehension and decoding skills through discussions about what they have read. They consolidate this learning through completing independent activities linked to the learning focus of the session.
Children will read a variety of genres including stories from other cultures, myths and legends, poetry, plays and non-fiction. They will read books written by a range of significant authors including Anthony Browne and Roald Dahl.
Parents are given clear expectations about reading and are able to attend parent training and skill sharing sessions.
100 Books Challenge
In order to inspire a love of a range of texts, at the start of each learning phase EYFS/KS1/KS2), children are given the challenge of reading 100 books. In order to support children with achieving this challenge, they receive a smaller list (usually around 10 books) to read by the end of each half term. Each time they complete a list, they receive a certificate.
